Boston Public Library Considers Adding Apartments To 4 Library Branches

Ms Saraya Wintersmith’s article from 2019 follows; it describes a citywide idea for adding other compatible uses to existing libraries. As cited above, the City is making progress with this mixed-use approach. The usefulness of this idea for small cities and towns is to analyze their existing facilities – libraries, museums, community centers, civic theaters and parks – and leverage their location, infrastructure and clientele as the core assets and features for making places. 

From Ms Wintersmith: The Boston Public Library is considering adding apartments to share space with four neighborhood branches slated for renovation, a rare combination that exists in New York and Chicago but would be the first in the city.
